Fisherman’s Corner: The Pompano are still here!
For decades now while living in NW Florida, I have waited all winter for spring/summer and those Silver Pancakes to arrive! Yes, they are as good as pancakes for those who love them both! This is why I gear up early now and head out to the beaches for surf fishing Florida Pompano style. If you get lucky you will find these little babies waiting just inside the first sandbar looking for your offerings. No matter what you throw at them, these flat-sided fish will give your gear a test for sure. Man, they are strong for their size!
The action has been crazy this year along with the strange weather patterns. Pompano are still being caught up & down the Panhandle Beaches where the waters have been clean. Currently, Panama City Beach is experiencing a late bloom of June Grass & other algae, and the Pompano don’t seem to like the dirty water. Folks are getting nice limits from 30-A west to Pensacola.
So, if you do get some for your dining pleasure make sure you look into blackening those fillets drenched in butter, or baked whole with garlic, lime, and cilantro. Either way, you will remember it because these fish taste amazing and have their own unique flavor. Check it out, eat some, and then come back to this post and let me know what you think!
If you’re down here on Panama City Beach now and want to catch one? Just give me a call at 850-485-3667, and I’ll get you set up for POMPANO! I go to Pompano Rich for my gear! Hu
